Cheshire DEC promotes an understanding of and respect for the lives and cultures of everyone in order for us all to contribute and actively participate in the development of a fair society, which celebrates diversity and difference and our global interdependency.

Through its work the Centre contributes to:

Developing understanding of global issues

Increasing knowledge and understanding of the economic, social, political,
environmental and cultural issues that shape all our lives.

Promoting understanding of local-global interdependence

Appreciating the links between the lives of people throughout the world, particularly between people in Cheshire and the UK and people in developing countries.

Challenging stereotypes

Challenging myths and stereotypes about people's behaviour and lifestyles.

Developing positive attitudes

Developing values and attitudes that acknowledge rights and responsibilities in local and global communities.

Taking action

Creating opportunities for active, individual and collective participation in achieving change for a more just society and world, now and for the future.

In the implementation of projects and activities, Cheshire DEC applies a development education approach: a process of teaching and learning that gives explicit attention to:

• a global dimension, development perspectives, and human rights principles
  
  
• acknowledging, dealing with and applying different and sometimes contradictory perspectives to issues and situations
  
  
• the use of multi-disciplinary methods involving the learner in the education process
  
  
• increasing understanding, skills and motivation for involvement in change in local and world society.
